According to an article written in the New York Times March 2007, American baby boomers report more problems with their health than the pre-boomers did when they were in their fifties. The younger group compared to the older group was more likely to report difficulty in walking, climbing steps, getting up from a chair, kneeling or crouching, and doing normal everyday task. These findings (which come from the Health and Retirement study, a nationwide survey of more than 20,000 over the age of 50 that began in 1992) are surprising, but offer insight into a growing market, Durable Medical Equipment is fast becoming the answer to the prayers of many seniors.
The senior market or baby boomers as some like to call them is growing at a staggering rate. 70 million Americans will turn 65 over the next ten years. Combine these statistics with the health issues reported by younger boomers and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that there is a growing need to service this target group. One of the most critical aspects of a senior’s life is independence. Unfortunately the physical mobility of older people is no match when faced with father time. Most have the mental ability to do just about anything they can imagine, but physical limitations can often make life difficult.
The bright side to these findings is that everyday companies create products that help to curve these gloomy facts in the favor of Americas most noble citizens. Thanks to products referred to by those in the health industry as Durable Medical equipment (DME), some seniors have found the help needed to offset physical limitations and many have regained their independence.
Durable Medical Equipment (DME) includes items such as oxygen, wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, diabetic testing supplies, and diabetic shoes. For certain equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, Medicare pays rental fees for up to 13 months. After this, the equipment becomes the property of the patient.
